You finally have your new website. After working closely with a designer and taking some time to figure out how your website will fit in with your branding and digital marketing strategy, it is ready for launch. But now what?
It’s not enough to simply let it sit there and hope people find it. You need to actively be involved in trying to drive traffic towards it. After all it is traffic that turns your beautiful website into profit.

With that in mind, we have compiled the following list of things you can do to drive traffic to your website. Most of these tips don’t involve being tech savvy. You won’t need a degree in computer engineering from MIT. You just need to think logically and spend a few minutes each day to keep on top of your marketing strategy, and soon the clicks will start building.

Advertise

This seems pretty obvious, but you would be amazed by how many website owners aren’t willing to invest the time and capital to let people know they are there. Think about it this way. If you plan a big birthday party, put up decorations, hire a DJ, and get the event caterers in, you still need to send out the invites - otherwise it will be just you sitting there all night.

Once your website is launched, you need to try a range of advertising to see what works and brings people to your site. This could be paid search, social media, or display ads. Each paid channel has its pros and cons, so you need to think carefully about which is most suitable for your brand. Try and target the right people and you’ll soon see a boost in traffic on your site.

Social media

Social media is the easiest and most convenient place to be proactive about pushing your content. Use Twitter for short and snappy links to tempt in new visitors. You can also use image heavy sites like Pinterest and Instagram to show people what you are all about. If you are a business, then using LinkedIn is a great way to network.

Go big on the headlines

If you understand how people consume content, then you know all about the power of the headline. Newspapers have known it since the beginning. You have a short window to attract people in so use those few words in the most powerful way possible.

Without a compelling headline, even the best written and most informative blog post will go unread. Try and write a few different headlines for each piece of content before settling on your winner.

Keep it varied

Your content needs to be varied, so try and include a good mix of long and short posts. Use images and videos where you can, and even the odd infographic if applicable. By making it varied you are making your content more appealing to a broader base of readers.

Don’t forget SEO

SEO is still important. Making sure your content is still optimised for search engines will have a big impact on the efficacy of everything you do online.

Are you still including internal and external links? Have you done your keyword research and included meta descriptions? It doesn’t have to take ages - just a few minutes before publishing should be enough to make your content visible to the right search engines.

Go after the long tail

Have you got your main search terms covered? Great. But then so has everyone else, which means a smaller slice of the pie for you. But what they might not have done is think about long tail keywords. These are the keywords that target the more specific goods and services you might provide. Go after these and you might be able to take bigger chunks of the smaller pie.

Mix up your blogs

Try and secure guest blog posts for your site or guest yourself on other sites with links back to yours. A good guest can help to reinforce your brand and drive traffic, but make sure it is suitable content or a suitable guest site before you agree.

Link internally

Your internal linking structure can help to determine the strength of your profile. You should always be on the lookout for internal linking opportunities. This will help to strengthen your own on-site SEO but also result in a better experience for the user, which is ultimately the aim of driving traffic to your site.

Get thought leaders involved

Try and get interviews with the big names in your business on your site. This will help to establish you as an authority. You might not think it is possible but it is always worth an ask, and you’d be amazed how often they will say yes. This kind of recognition can be very helpful for boosting traffic.

Email marketing

Yes, it might seem a little old-fashioned but it still works. Even a small success in an email campaign can have big results for traffic. Of course, you should never bombard people with too many emails but the occasional well-timed message can be very effective.

Speaking of old-fashioned marketing methods, never forget that word of mouth is the best of them all. Try and make yourself comment-worthy and people will soon start talking about you, which can have a dramatic effect on marketing.

Create a community

We all like to be part of something bigger, so try and make your site a hub for community activity. Set up a forum or message board, organise online events such as webinars or Q&A sessions and establish yourself as the go-to place for people with an interest in what you do.
